Embracing Winter: 6 Unique MSP Experiences

BY EMMA GEARY - FEBRUARY 9 2022

If we had to pick a month to call our “winter rut,” it would be February. The blustery days and slushy sidewalks seem never-ending, and winter feels like a permanent state of mind.

This month can also make everyday routines feel tired–even our free time is filled with sameness. Maybe it’s frequenting restaurants that are closest to our homes or spending more 1:1 time with the couch as we catch up on the latest Netflix.

While hibernation is important, so are experiences that push us outside our comfort zone. Instead of ordering our repeat-worthy takeout order, this February we’re connecting with our creative side physically, mentally, and interpersonally.

Here are six LAB-approved ways to creatively fill your weekend in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, no matter who you’re braving the cold with.

Get Moving

Pickleball

Pickleball tournament, anyone? This fast-growing sport is easy to pick up, even for those without the best hand-eye. Visit Lucky Shots Pickleball or Minneapolis Cider Company for court time with your friends and libations on the side. This activity is perfect for double dates, large groups of friends, and anyone who wants to move in a new way this winter.

Bouldering

Welcome to a playground for kiddos and adults alike. The Minneapolis Bouldering Project is a colorful opportunity to expand your idea of movement. Whether it’s your first time bouldering or you’re a climbing pro, this space has it all and it’s easy for first-timers to catch on without too much onboarding. After tackling this life-size jungle gym, stop by the neighboring Pryes Brewing for a celebratory beer and a game of Featherball.

Sip and Savor

Cooking Classes

Why spend another Saturday at a restaurant when you can make a gourmet meal yourself? The Date Night Cooking Classes at Cooks of Crocus Hill are the ideal way to learn more about worldwide cuisines and their perfect wine pairings. Whether you’re a kitchen novice or ready to show off your skills, a cooking class is a great way to stretch your comfort zone and savor in the rewards of your hard work.

Outdoor Cocktails

Put your happy hour on ice and visit Cardamom’s spectacular Ice Bar at the Walker Art Center. With stunning floral arrangements by Apricot Floral encased in ice and specialty cocktails, this is the perfect way to embrace winter among world-renowned art and sculpture. Looking for a warmer option? Grab an igloo at NineTwentyFive in Wayzata or Broken Clock Brewing in Minneapolis for a cozy “outdoor” way to sip champagne and watch the snowfall.

Self-Care

Nordic Sauna

Reconnecting with yourself is equally as important as filling your social calendar. Take an opportunity to reconnect with your body and embrace a good sweat at Cedar and Stone Sauna in the North Loop. With their immersive ice-casted sauna experience, you can detox your body and mind in ways that a hot shower can never quite accomplish.

Center Yourself

Yoga is a go-to for our entire team (our Lead Designer, Erica, is becoming a certified instructor as we speak!) and is one of the most effective ways to calm your mind and body. To add an extra sweat, try hot yoga at one of the many cozy local studios around Minneapolis. Our favorites include Modo Yoga and Up Yoga

No matter where February takes you, we hope you’re able to embrace our coldest months and lean into the coziness that makes Minnesota great, and summer all that much sweeter.
