Strike a Pose: Tips for Feeling Camera-Ready from KNZ Photography

BY EMMA GEARY - JULY 19, 2024

Whether you’re booking a wedding photographer, preparing for a headshot, or looking to capture a milestone moment, getting in front of a camera can be…intimidating. So, how can you prepare to look and feel your best before the flashbulb pops? We caught up with McKenzie Berquam from KNZ Photography to share how she helps clients feel like their authentic selves both in the moment and on the camera roll.

McKenzie's journey in photography began by photographing newborns, and she quickly realized her passion stretched beyond just the babes, but to every milestone in a person’s life. She knew from the start that she was creatively charged with finding ways to make each session unique.

"I found that I had a hard time doing the same thing at every single session, always thinking about how we can take it beyond what you see on Pinterest or inspiration photos."

In addition to offering engagement, wedding, and other typical service offerings, McKenzie craved a way to capture couples in their most natural element.

"I wanted to have an option for a more unposed session, which is where the date night idea came from," she explains. “These sessions involve some small direction but primarily focus on capturing the couple in action, making them feel more in their element.” Whether you’re playing cards together at a brewery or cooking dinner at home, these sessions are the perfect way to feel relaxed with the one you love, while happening to have an expert photographer there to bring out the beauty of the moment.

To dial things up, KNZ Photography also offers steamy sessions for couples who want to capture a more intimate look at their relationship. No matter the circumstances though, McKenzie has a few tried-and-true ways to ensure everyone looks their most natural and at-ease on film.

First, she recommends getting to know your photographer. Start your relationship with a call or meeting to get a sense for their energy, which will be important once you’re shooting together. "I always love that first conversation because it allows us both to learn more about eachother. Once they get to know me, they realize they can be themselves. I find this first interaction is the most helpful in calming pre-shoot jitters" she shares.

Throughout the session, McKenzie has a few easy tips to stay relaxed on set:

  • Keep Moving: No need to sit in a pose too long - keep moving! She encourages clients to stay close to each other and continue moving their bodies, which gives the photos a more relaxed and natural feel.

  • Take Breaks: Regular breaks help you to feel like you don’t have to be “on” all the time and can take a breath to stay present and smiling.

  • Wear What Makes You Feel Good: McKenzie doesn’t recommend buying a whole new outfit or trying a new style for your photos - wear what makes you feel most like yourself. Wear those favorite pair of jeans or the dress that always makes you smile. Feeling at home in your body (and clothing) shines through in the final product.

  • Communicate: If at any point you feel overwhelmed, unsure, or uncomfortable, speak up! It’s your photographer’s job to adapt to the environment and the client’s needcs, and that’s what they’re experts in orchestrating. Not loving the vibe? Speak up and switch it up!

“I always tell my clients that if I’m not saying much while we’re shooting, it means you’re doing a great job. But if you want more direction, I’m always here to offer suggestions. I think people expect these shoots–especially the steamy ones–to feel bold and crazy, but in reality, it’s a calm, slow, and peaceful experience.”

No matter the photo session, McKenzie offers a final piece of advice: "Do what makes you feel great from the beginning." Whether it's through a video call to get to know her better or wearing your favorite outfit, taking steps to ensure your comfort will lead to better, more authentic photos.
